Newton A. Bauer, 97, of Hawkeye, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 12, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye with Rev. Jason Princer officiating. Interment will be at the Hawkeye Cemetery with military rites by Arnold-Rogers Post #312, American Legion of Hawkeye. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 11th at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be made in Newt’s name to a charity of the donor’s choice or the Hawkeye Fun Days Committee.
Newton Arthur, son of Otto and Ida Zessin Bauer, was born October 8, 1917, in Reno County, Kansas, near Sterling. He received his education in the Reno County Schools. From 1942 to 1945, he served with the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. On February 28, 1946, he was united in marriage with Belva Earnest. A resident of Iowa since 1960, Newt farmed in Bethel Township, near Hawkeye and Alpha. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye and Arnold-Rogers Post #312, American Legion of Hawkeye. He enjoyed tinkering with things, traveling, and especially time spent with his grandchildren-they were always welcome.
Newt is survived by four children, Roger (Peggy) Bauer of Cumming, Georgia, Richard (Jane) Bauer of Kensett, Iowa, Gerald (Susan) Bauer of Oelwein, and Kathleen (Doug) Bauer-Davis of Hawkeye; six grandchildren, Gennie Anderson, Julie (Robert) Neelbauer, Christopher (Avery) Bauer, Sarah (Brian) Riedel, Elizabeth (Aaron Byrd) Sunnes, and Marshall Sunnes; and four great grandchildren, Spencer Riedel, Alexandria Neelbauer, Brynlee Bauer, and Enso Arthur-Sinclair Byrd.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Belva, who died December 22, 2012; and three sisters, Luella Roberts, Esther Earnest, and Alice Sellers.
